MDS AIPGDEE preparations B-IDS | orthOdentic wire MCQ

Which of the following orthOdentic wire can be Heat Treated?
A. Stainless Steel
e. Elgiloy
B. Beta- Titanium
D. Ni-Ti

Ans. (e)
Eigiloy- Elgiloy, the cobalt-chromium alloy. has the advantage that it can be supplied in a softer and therefore more formable state, and then can be hardened by heat treatment after being shaped. The heat treatment increases strength significantly. After heat treatment, the softest Elgiloy becomes equivalent to regular stainless steel, while harder initial grades are equivalent to the "super" steels.
Heat Treatment- A cobalt-chromium-nickle alloy may be softened by heat soaking at 1100-1200 degree C. followed by a rapid quench. For the alloy (Elgiloy), the Alloy should be held at 482 degree C for 5 hrs, according to manufacturer.
